Phase 1

Foundation / Builder

The launchpad. Students discover the fundamentals of robotics and electronics through hands-on building, real code from day one, and structured projects. This is where robotics for kids begins — students learn to use real tools, read simple circuits, and think like engineers from day one. No experience needed.

This is where every Plum Crazy Robotics student begins — and where many parents searching for robotics classes for kids or STEM classes for kids in NJ are amazed at what their child can accomplish in just weeks.

Tools & Skills: Basic circuits, LEDs, resistors, intro to Arduino. As long as a student can read, they start on real programming languages — Python, Arduino, and Java — written in a real Linux shell environment, the same way working engineers write code. Real hand tools from day one: screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, wire strippers, and multimeters. First solder joints with professional soldering equipment. Reading schematics. No block coding. No toy tools.

Projects: LED circuits, basic robots, autonomous line-following and maze-solving bots, 3D-printed custom builds, first custom sensor projects.

Phase 2

Engineer

Students move into advanced electronics, deeper programming, AI foundations, and complex multi-system builds. This is where coding classes for kids meet real engineering — students write Python, program Arduino and ESP32, and create working IoT devices. This phase demands focus, persistence, and genuine curiosity — qualities our instructors evaluate before approving advancement.

Tools & Skills: Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, Python programming. Sensor integration, IoT projects, wireless robot control via Bluetooth and WiFi. PID control concepts, serial communication between microcontrollers. 3D printing and custom fabrication.

Projects: Mecanum wheel robots, tracked tank-style robots, WiFi-controlled / IoT robots, weather stations, smart home sensors, custom IoT devices.

Phase 3

Innovator

Innovators work on AI development, advanced coding, independent research projects, and receive direct mentorship. This is where students go from learning technology to creating it — and building a real engineering portfolio for college applications.

Tools & Skills: Machine learning, computer vision with OpenCV, autonomous systems. Raspberry Pi AI projects, data science, advanced Python and C++. Independent research projects with mentor guidance. College portfolio prep, LinkedIn and GitHub setup.

Projects: Computer vision / LiDAR robots, wearable electronics, home automation projects, facial recognition systems, autonomous vehicles, custom AI applications, portfolio-ready independent research.

Focus
AI Dev, Advanced Code, Independent Projects
Requirement: Portfolio review + instructor recommendation from Phase 2.

All tools are age-appropriate and supervised.

Phase 4

Architect

The retrofit and revival phase. Architect students take real engineering equipment — vintage industrial robots, commercial scientific instruments, legacy control hardware — and bring it into the modern era. In industry this discipline is called retrofitting or modernization: taking hardware that still works but predates modern electronics, and wiring it into today's microcontrollers, wireless protocols, AI, and web interfaces.

This is real engineering work, not a curriculum. Every Architect project is unique because every piece of old gear is different. There's no lesson plan to follow — just real problems to solve.

Recent Architect work at Plum Crazy Robotics has included reviving a vintage industrial robotic arm with modern ESP32 control, voice commands, and AI vision; web-enabling commercial scientific instruments so data streams live to custom dashboards; and integrating modern wireless sensor networks with legacy industrial equipment.

Tools & Skills: Reverse-engineering legacy hardware. Multi-device communication over WiFi, Bluetooth, UDP, and serial. Integrating commercial instruments via API and data pipelines. Real-time web dashboards. Voice, vision, and AI combined into retrofitted systems. The kind of engineering that mirrors real industry modernization work.

Projects: Complex multi-system robots combining everything from earlier phases, scientific instrumentation retrofits (spectrophotometer, thermal imaging), vintage industrial robotic arms revived with modern tech, reverse-engineered and prototyped electronics.
